Many major Oil Spills have occurred. We can learn from our mistakes. In this section, we study two oil spills.

ALVENUS OIL SPILL

This occurred on July 30, 1984. The British tanker Alvenus hit the soft bottom of a channel 11 miles off the Louisiana coast spilling 2.8 million gallons of Venezuelan crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. This was due to the tanker being grounded in an offshore ship channel.

MEGA BORG OIL SPILL

This occurred on June 8, 1990. The MEGA BORG released 5.1 million gallons of oil as the result of a lightering accident and subsequent fire. The incident occurred 57  miles south-southeast of Galveston, Texas. The Mega Borg was unloading crude oil onto another tanker when the spill occurred.
